On May 14, the Phelan's school orchestra and the other intermediate school (5th-6th grade) orchestra had their concert for the parents. As part of the performance, Phelan's group, the 6th graders from Oakwood Intermediate, played an outstanding piece called "El Toro." The week before, there were tryouts for the cello and violin solos in the piece. Three or four cellos auditioned for the solo, with the Middle School teacher (a cellist) for a judge. Guess who the soloist was? That's right--Phelan! We were so proud. And that's not all--he was the soloist for their competition at the Texas Music Festival in Austin where they received all 1's--the highest score--and their performance at school. He will be in orchestra next year in 7th grade, and we're waiting to find out if he will be in the Junior Varsity (8th grade) orchestra as a 7th grader!
Flash photography was discouraged while the students were playing, but I did get a few good pictures!
Yes, that IS a full-sized cello!
Here is Phelan with the girls after the concert:
Afterwards, we went to On the Border and had some chips & dip and yummy desserts!
