A "Happy Day": January 18, 2008
"A Happy Day" is a useful phrase for Helena. It is used to describe all things birthday-related, especially presents and candles (all candles) and sometimes cake, though she does say the word "cake." Sometimes she uses "A Happy Day" more generically, and she will travel around the house shaking everyone's hands, saying, "A Happy Day, Momma!" "A Happy Day, Baby!" "A Happy Day, Bray" (that's brother/Phelan) "A Happy Day, Daddy!" (She started shaking hands after watching Fiddler on the Roof a number of times. After Tevye gives permission to Motel to marry Tzietel, Helena repeated, "Ank Tu, Papa!" and shook hands. She would also say, "Ank tu, Baby!" "Ank tu, Momma!" etc. She also tends to like shaking hands during Mass.)

Happy Day! So sweet.
Funny thing - my Elizabeth (3) likes shaking hands too, and she is also obsessed with birthdays. Whenever we make a cake, she's convinced it's a birthday. I think all that excitement with Christmas and then her birthday (on the 1st) just made it high, high importance. She has liked shaking hands (she says "PEECIE") forever, it seems, and that's the reward at Mass for her. She has a little ritual with everyone - kiss!, hug!, PEECIE! (the exclamation marks are COMPLETELY NECESSARY so that you can hear her unbridled enthusiasm...)
